On January 5-6, 2008, we joined Pack 406 for a weekend stay on the USS Lexington, an aircraft carrier that is permanently moored in Corpus Christi.
After taking a little time to see some things, some of the boys went to the aquarium, while some of us went to the Radio Merit Badge course. The boys learned quite a bit, including the frequencies that are assigned to different radio bands and how to send their name in Morse Code.
After the lecture portion of the class was complete, we got to go "behind the scenes" to the radio room. This was the main communication room for the USS Lexington, and is off limits to everyone else on the ship. This equipment was state-of-the-art -- more advanced than anything that existed on any other Navy ship at the time.
Our instructor then began finding someone for the boys to talk with on the HAM radios.
After each of the boys had an opportunity to speak on the radio, it was free time again until dinner.
Under the stairs in part of one of the 4 engines, and one of the many control panels for those engines.
The ship's chapel.
Always time for cards on a 4277 outing...
Sunday morning, before leaving, those who were caught doing something they weren't supposed to be doing (i.e. hands in your pockets, running, etc) since coming on board Saturday had to do the Chicken Dance for everyone. Our Troop was WELL represented on the stage. *sigh*
